They think its all over....... It is now !!

Saturday 25th June 2011
Lomas suited & booted
Its all gone by in such a blur of activity its hard to believe its all but over!!
The morning was given over to the kids going around with their host parents & getting up to different activities all over the city then it was off to the Midland Hotel for the final presentations and closing ceremony.

The lomas turned up in their tour suits and looked very smart and it turned out to be Lomas captain Bank's birthday so we got the Wright Robinson lads & Lomas together  in a scrum & sang happy birthday to him. Once all the dignitaries from the council had arrived it was a sit down dinner with a buffet from the four visiting teams' countries. Food from India, Trinidad & Tobago, South Africa & of course Thailand made sure all the lads had plenty to eat.

Once dinner was over Councillor Mark Hackett the man who made this tour his own gave a rousing speech about how much the city of Manchester had enjoyed being host & how much it meant to the youth & host schools as well as the visiting teams to have taken part. He was so impressed by the success that he wants to make it an annual event !!.
Phil Clarke of the RFU then presented the touring captains with a rugby shirt before handing proceedings over to Touraid director Andy Berry the driving force behind this incredible charity that has seen over an amazing 50 tours of under privileged kids to the UK since its inception 5 years ago for his final say on the event which all agreed was a brilliant success.

After all the formalities were over it was down to the visiting teams to do a spot on the floor, the Indian side entertained with a bollywood dance routine with all the music and flare that entails, then the South African team did a heartening rendition of their national anthem. The Trinidad & Tobago team did some Reggae music led by their inspirational coach Rudolph which had the whole hall clapping. Then it was down to Thailand and the boys came in wearing their ancient Thai Boxing gear to put on a Thai boxing demonstration that left the 500+ guests in awe !! At the end they all lined up with a Thai flag signed by all the schools & participants & sang the Thai national anthem before presenting the flag to the Lord Mayor who said he would have it framed & hung in a place of honour in the town hall !! Lots of people wanted photos of the lads in their kit including the Mayor & Chester Williams. Bank & WR captain Ben Powell were presented with signed match balls in memory of Banks birthday by Chester
With all the photos & formalities over it was down to the DJ's to rock and all the kids were on the dance floor for an impromptu dance off with the Trinidad and South African teams winning that one !!

A great week of educational activities, tours & rugby well done Touraid, Well done Wright Robinson Sports Academy, Well done Manchester & well done LOMAS !! See you all next year !!

Lomas Put in a Tremendous Performance to Earn Runners Up Spot

Lomas Put in a Tremendous Performance to Earn Runners Up Spot
Thursday 23rd June 2011

As the UK summer continues to bloom we woke up to almost sub zero temperatures and torrential rain. The lads were off to Wright Robinson  school early to take part in a music festival which is all part of the International sports build up to the 2012 Olympics. Bob Wyte of Total Rugby was waiting for us to continue the story of the Lomas & the Asia Center Foundation by following the lads around during the morning as they continued their academics.
Lomas & Trinidad & Tobago
All too soon it was off to Eastland’s Stadium and the excitement amongst the lads was tangible as this was what they had been waiting for, to test their playing skills against international & Local competition in the Manchester Touraid Rugby Festival. 8 teams were drawn into 2 groups, the Lomas in Group B with East Midlands Academy, Trinidad & Tobago & Manchester Creative Tech Academy. The lads looking good in their Tour Kit sponsored by Khun Bim of Spikee were doing plenty of warm ups as the sun was threatening to break through and brighten proceedings. The first game of the group was Trinidad & Tobago taking on the East Midlands Academy and immediately made an impression and showed them selves as title contenders with an easy 5 try win. Next up the Lomas in their international debut against an organized looking Creative Tech side in the first half of the game it was pretty even but then the barreling runs of forwards Buk & Fai eventually began to take there toll on the English lads with Fai bursting through the defense and charging in for a try from the halfway line. From the resulting Kick Off lomas won possession with Nigh making a great break before off loading to Scrum half Sombat who got the backs into motion with Beng & Plerm taking play into the Creative Tech 22 where a great tackle brought the Lomas up short. Ah-med then stole the ball and Fai charged over for his 2nd try of the game. The constant tackling by the Creative Tech side was beginning to take its toll and just before the final whistle prop Buk got in on the act and forced his way over in the corner for a 3 try to nil win. Great start by Lomas.
Next up East Midlands who were totally out classed by the Lomas in a stunning display of attacking rugby with Fai going in for a game breaking 4 try haul, Buk getting 2 & Sombat scoring a great individual try before East Midlands scored a fantastic consolation try right at the end. Lomas win 7 tries to 1.
Last game of the group was Trinidad & Tobago & this was the game that would decide if the Lomas would make the final. From the start the bigger Caribbean lads took the game to Lomas and only a great tackle by Mee kept the lads in the game. The well drilled T & T team kept hammering away but the tackling kills of the Lomas kept them at bay. With the score still 0-0 Plerm put in a big hit on the big T & T prop to save a score but injured his arm in the process & had to leave the field. The break in play seemed to unsettle the T & T team & Lomas, down to 9 men broke through with Buk being forced over in the corner by the Pack to break the deadlock, With the clock running down the T & T boys were pushing for a try but great turn over ball by nigh saw Captain Beng race away for what would prove the match winning score.
3 games played, 3 wins and a place in the Manchester Touraid Rugby Festival final.

Manchester Touraid Rugby Festival Runners Up Lomas
Lomas & Wright Robinson Sports Academy
The lads were all pumped for the final but were carrying injuries & playing against a very good Indian side from the Kulcutu Institute of sport. In a tight opening encounter the Lomas pushed hard for a score but being a man down didn’t help and gaps started to appear as the very well drilled Indian side threw the ball around. The Lomas just couldn’t get their hands on the ball and in the end conceded 4 tries to Lose the final but impressed the many watching in the crowd with their brand of play and never say die attitude. The Lomas cheered on their host school Wright Robinson in their group games who ended up finishing 5th & vice versa Fantastic camaraderie & team bonding which has been a highlight of this tour so far. A great event with some great talent on show & some really good rugby skills & entertaining games. Big thanks to Phil Clarke & the RFU for running the tournament and of course to Andy Berry of Touraid who organized the event
As if the lads weren’t getting enough of the English summer Andy,
Alex & Scott of the WR sports department took the lads & hosts on another winter experience to the Chillout Factor Ski Center where the lads could see real snow for the first time and enjoy some sledging and a few trips down the Luge. Excellent fun & apart from the odd bit of frost bite it will be another memory that the boys will never forget

Friday 24th June 2011

Brilliant sunshine, blue skies with a north westerly straight off the Pennines at least gave the illusion of summer though by the time we reached WR the clouds & artic winds had returned. A special assembly had been scheduled for the Year 7’s where a power point presentation was given highlighting the tour before the Lomas dressed in ancient Thai boxing style did a Thai boxing demonstration before singing the Thai national anthem. We presented the school with a Lomas playing shirt & Thai flag signed by all the participating kids & the WR PE department which will take pride of place in a display cabinet in the schools trophy room.
Lomas & Hosts
Afternoon was given over to Rugby coaching with both teams enthusiastic in their efforts before mixing up and playing a game.
The coaches and organizers will get time to chill out this evening after being invited by winsloe RFC to attend a BBQ & drinks evening at the club.
Tomorrow the lads will have a final day with their host parents before attending the presentation & closing ceremony at the Midland Hotel.

A Manchester Mid Summers day !!

Lomas, Touraid Crew & Chester

Man Who ??
Tuesday 21 June 2011
Waking up to another typical Manchester summers day of sub zero temperatures & torrential down pours it was off back to the Wright Robinson Sports College to see how the Lomas were doing with their academics in the host kids classes.
All was well with the lads doing their best to get their heads around the subjects with a little help from their friends & really enjoying the experience. The coaches Pat, Panom & Ken were invited to go on a cross country run with one of the classes with Pat eventually coming in last ( I was acting as sweeper honest !!) completely drenched after a typical summer shower. Then it was off to the Manchester Town Hall to meet with the Lord Mayor and the other team captains, Andy Berry & his touraid members & ex Springbok & 1995 World Cup winner Chester Williams for a press conference & publicity photo shoot. Luckily Summer arrived, all 20 minutes of it during the photo session with brilliant sunshine before a downpour ended proceedings.
Back at Wright Robinson the Lomas and their host kids were boarding buses to meet up with us at slightly more famous stadium than Karon Beach, Old Trafford the home of Manchester United round ball club. The Lomas loved the tour of such a famous and prestigious place but all said they would have preferred it if it was Twickenham !!

The lads have been finding it hard to come to terms with such wonderful UK weather and some of them the food although all the host families have been great and have tried to keep the boys well fed and occupied by taking them rugby training, sight seeing, crazy golf, etc in their spare time. The bonding between the host kids and the Lomas has been one of the high lights of the tour so far and a credit to Andy Berry & the Touraid concept. The whole community at write Robinson especially Sue, Sean & Scott of the PE department have been brilliant & even talked the senior members of the tour along with Touraids Andy Berry, Chester Williams & the Lord mayor of Manchester to partake in a Zumba Zumba aerobic dance fund raiser for touraid where we all made complete fools of ourselves and had a great time doing it. ( Bound to appear on Utube at some stage !!) After burning off all those calories it was straight down to China town for an all you can eat Chinese before heading home tired, wet, freezing but happy !!

Wednesday 22 June 2011

After a light breakfast of Bacon, Egg, Sausage & all the trimmings (well for me anyway) it was back to WR to meet up with the Lomas. Whilst they were doing their academics the coaches were invited to join various sports classes to view the different coaching techniques in operation.
Andy Berry Touraid & Phil Clarke RFU
After 1st break the gauntlet was thrown down by the WR host lads to a dodge ball International against the Lomas. After a hard fought session the final game was won by WR lads to tie the match 2 games all just as the bell sounded. After lunch it was into the buses for the short drive down to Broughton Park RFC for the bit the boys had all been waiting for, some real on the ball coaching by the RFU’s Phil Clarke and his RFU coaching team. All the teams involved in the Touraid Rugby Festival tomorrow were there and the coaches mixed them all up into 4 different groups and sent them off to 4 different skill stations. To finish off there were games by the mixed groups & there was a lot of genuine talent on show with the South African team looking fast & agile & the Indian team also looking real contenders. The team from Trinidad and Tobago entertained everyone with their silky skills and the English teams including WR will be putting up a fight. The Lomas are looking in good shape and surprised RFU coaches with their tackling ability, ball handling skills and overall reading of the game. Lets hope they can make it through to one of the finals tomorrow but ultimately Rugby is the winner.
Tomorrows Lomas schedule is academics in the morning before the big showdown at the Manchester Touraid Rugby Festival at Eastlands Stadium in Manchester

The Touraid Adventure begins

Saturday/Sunday 18/19 June
Ready for take off !!
The Lomas accompanied by their families arrived at Phuket International airport to be welcomed by Alan Cooke MBE the main sponsor of the Lomas Rugby youth program and the Phuket Gazette as they prepared to set off on their adventure. Dressed in their tour kit of T Shirts & hoodies co sponsored by the Aussie Bar photos were taken and good byes and hugs from the family given then off to departure lounge for the 1st leg of the journey to BKK,s Suvanabhumbi airport then Etihad Airlines with a stopover in Abu Dhabi then straight on to Manchester.
All the kids having never flown before it was a slightly strange experience and some turbulence had them all a bit nervous. Once on the Etihad flight it didn’t take them long to become experienced travelers by mastering the use of the flight attendant call buttons and the in flight games & not much sleep was had as they ate the plane out of pot noodles & and beat all comers on the games console.
The 2.5 hour stop over in Abu Dhabi didn’t dampen their spirits and we met up with the South African Kids & Chester Williams who were traveling on the same flight.
Abu Dhabi Airport
Arriving in Manchester we were met by the Mayor of Manchester, Phil Clark of the RFU, Sue Whatmore from the Wright Robinson Sports college and Dan Gill of sponsor Allianze the Touraid liaison officer.
Manchester in the summer & the boys weren’t prepared for the scorching 11C temperatures and immediately delved into their bags for any warm clothing on hand. The novelty of seeing their breath had the boys asking the question “any chance of seeing some snow?” Manchester in the middle of summer anything is possible!!
Anyway into the coach & off to Wright Robinson Sports College where all the host parents & kids were waiting. A great scene as kids were paired of with smiling parents and kids to be taken home for some well earned rest.

Lomas meet host families
Monday 20th June
All the kids went to the collage with their respective host and joined in with their normal school activity until meeting up with all the school students in the sports hall for a motivational speech by Craig Heap a double commonwealth gold medal winner & local Mancurian. The school had organized an Olympic opening ceremony with all the school taking part and representing different countries with the Lomas and their hosts representing Thailand.
In the afternoon the teams from South Africa, Trinidad & Tobago & Kulkuta arrived to join in a mini Olympic sporting activities and a great time was had by all.
As an end to the days activities the kids did an hour long break dancing lesson which was a great laugh for all concerned & a fantastic way to end what was an awesome 1st day brilliantly organized by Sue, Sean and all the PE staff at Wright Robinson.
Tuesdays agenda is school lessons in the morning, press conference at Manchester town hall around lunch time then off for a tour of old Trafford football stadium
A great start to the tour and the kids have already made plenty of new friends
